Engine Failure
By: Hannah McLaughlin
Engine failure in any type of vehicle can be deadly, especially in airplanes. In larger jets and airlines, hundreds of people can be injured or killed, not to mention the millions of dollars worth in damage.
“The precautionary engine shutdowns were dealt with in accordance with the aircraft checklists. Total thrust to maintain flight was never a problem in the airplanes I flew, so the checklist dealt with the degradation caused by systems losses on the engine that was shut down. Those systems typically included generators and hydraulic pumps. Even if a system was totally lost, aircraft have backup or emergency systems allowing a safe return if the checklist procedures are followed,” Mark Holmes, retired Air force pilot, and Colson and Colson pilot said.
“There are several things that can cause engine failure. Most common is running out of fuel then engine fatigue, FOD foreign object debris (something gets sucked in to the engine like a screw, rocks and other small items) and lastly is bird strikes. Some problems an engine failure can cause are loss of electrical power, hydraulic power and cabin pressurization,” George Wainwright, Colson and Colson jet mechanic said. Engine failure is very uncommon in small planes and even more so in airlines.
“The causes are different for different engines, but not as different as some people might expect. For example, all engines, whether turbojet or piston, need fuel, air, and an ignition source to operate. Piston engines need a continuous source of ignition. Turbojet engines just need ignition for start, and are then self-sustaining. Nonetheless, both types of engines can fail with loss of ignition - the loss of ignition may just be caused by different factors. Afterburning turbofan engines can experience situations not found in non-afterburning turbofan engines.
These are most often caused by a pressure spike during afterburner ignition that propagates forward and slows -- or even stops -- the N1 fan blades and results in a situation called stagnation. On the other hand, non-afterburning turbofans can experience compressor stalls which are similar, and even caused by similar pressure spikes -- just the cause of the pressure spike is different. So, different causes like I mentioned -- but not as different as it might initially seem,” Holmes said. “I never had a total engine failure. I experienced a few engine malfunctions, such as afterburner blowouts, compressor stalls, and low oil pressure. Some of those required a precautionary engine shutdown.”
“Pilots actually spend a lot of time training just in case they encounter a problem. They train in the aircraft by simulating an engine failure by reducing engine power to idle this way they can see how the plane is going to handle. On bigger airplanes they still do this but they also train in the simulators every year when they go for training,” Wainwright said.
Pilots try to always be ready for situations like these, even though they rarely happen, it is better to always be prepared.

Nightmare Movie Review by Hannah McLaughlin
This Year Christmas will be Ours!
By: Hannah McLaughlin
Producer Tim Burton brings Halloween to life in the dark Claymation animation “The Nightmare before Christmas,” directed by Henry Selic.
It starts out in Halloween Town, at Halloween. Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, is tired of the same old thing. Sally, who was created by Dr. Finkelstein, feels the same way Jack does.
Jack finds Christmas Town and he loves it. Dr. Finkelstein (William Hickey) lends Jack some supplies to do experiments about Christmas. Jack decides to steal Christmas, but Sally has a vision about Christmas being ruined. Will it really be?
The special effects are interesting and different. Halloween Town is dark and dreary, but Christmas Town has white, red, and green, and was brighter and jollier than Halloween Town.
The camera angles are far and close up, and help see what is going on in the story. They are very good, and useful. They also help set the mood.
This is a good movie, but I would not suggest that young children watch it.

Pumpkin King
Takes Over Christmas
By: Esmeralda Diaz
Tim Burton’s dark comedy for children, “The Nightmare before Christmas” is a great movie for children 10 and up. Henry Selick was the producer of this movie. Danny Elfman and Chris Sarandon both play Jack Skellington, Catherine O’Hara play’s Sally, and William Hickey plays Dr. Finkelstain. This movie takes place in Halloween Town, Christmas Town, and a little bit of the real world.
Jack Skellington is the pumpkin king but he isn’t happy that way, he wants to be something more than that. So he goes into Christmas Town and see’s how everybody is happy there and how nothing is waiting to scare kids under their bed. Everything is colorful. So Jack goes back to Halloween Town and tells everyone about Christmas Town. Soon Jack tries to fiend the meaning of Christmas, and tries to take it over, but Sally tries to stop him.
This movie is basically about Jack trying to take over Christmas, and Sally trying to stop him. This movie is great. If you like songs and Halloween then this is the perfect movie for you. Some of the characters seem mean but actually have feelings like Jack. One of the human conditions in this movie is that Dr. Finkelstain didn’t want Sally to go out and discover what’s out there.
This movie has great camera angles. Some might make you think that Jack is watching you. Once you see what Jack does to take over Christmas I am sure you’ll want to keep watching.
This movie is great and interesting movie for those who like Halloween.

Jack The Pumpkin King Is Tired of Hallowing
By Draven Morehead
Jack The Pumpkin King is tired of being the King of Hallowing and wants something different. He walks into a forest and keeps walking while he’s asleep and fids something new and finds a whole bunch of doors. He is interested in all of them and likes them but one really catches his empty eye socket.
He walks in through it and it was shaped like a Christmas tree the others were shaped like the other holidays. He falls in and he lands in something new like he wanted. There’s snow and colors and everything Christmas would have.
He really likes it and he finds it’s name Christmas town like his town is Hallowing town. He really wants it so he shows it to the citizens of hallowing town by giving them a presentation on Christmas. He doesn’t call Santa Santa Claus but Sandy Claws instead.
He tries to make Christmas and kidnaps Santa and gives him a break. The kidnapers tae him to Oggie Boogie the second meanest monster in town. Oggie was going to kill Him but Sally a doll stalls him.
I won’t tell you f it ends well or if Christmas is a total fail. I think that the movie is very good but for per say a 1 year old it would not be a good movie for it.

Nightmare before Christmas

Henry Selick directed a dark animated and clay mated children’s comedy. The setting is Halloween town, Christmas town and a little bit of the real world. There are six main characters, Jack Skellington, Sally,The mayor, Evil doctor, Santa, and zero.
In this movie Jack is tired of the same old thing year after year. He wants a change. He finds some doors. On each door is a holiday symbol. He finds one with a tree, and goes in and discovers Christmas town. Once back to Halloween town, a town meeting is called and he announces that they are going to steal Christmas. Sally, who is a ragdoll that an evil doctor made, she’s made out of fabric, stuffing and stitching string, she thinks that stealing Christmas is a bad idea. When Jack is in Christmas town looking under the bed it’s almost as if he’s looking right at you. And lastly when he falls right under the Christmas town sign it feels like you are looking at it too. Some interesting uses of colors made is at Halloween town it’s dark, gloomy, and makes everything look kind of scary and Christmas town is bright, happy, and makes someone feel like they are welcome.Tim Burton producer of this film also did some early short films such as Vincent, and Frankenweenie. Vincent is Tim Burton’s directorial debut. Frankenweenie is the uncut version of Tim Burton’s live-action directorial debut. This movie is a good movie. I would recommend you watch it because it has a little romance, a little singing, and it’s a little scary. So if you like a little bit of all of that then this is the movie.

Nightmare before Christmas
Be careful of Halloween town it might scare you. The nightmare before Christmas is a children’s movie but for bigger children because this movie is pretty spooky. The genre of the movie is animation and claymation. The director of this movie is is Henri Selick and the producer is Tim Burton. Tim Burton is a guy that likes to do movies about black magic and about scary stuff.
This movie is pretty spooky it has a lot of black magic and dark stuff. The claymation is pretty good although in the movie theres a lot of singing and in my opinion it gets really annoying. The main plot was in Halloween town. Halloween town is a dull place everything is black and gray and also scary. But when you go to Christmas town you can see that everything is joyful and cheerful and happy and has lots of color and don’t have heads and skeletons like Halloween town has. The main characters in the movie was in the movie was Jack skelington (Tim Burton) and sally (Catherine). The plot of the movie is that Jack found Christmas town and thought that it was really beautiful and now is trying to steel Christmas town but doesn’t know the meaning of Christmas. In the movie I didn’t see much camera angles but the ones I saw were good.

Super Bowl 45 by Matthew Simpson
Super Bowl 45 was outstanding. The Pittsburg Steelers and the Green bay Packers. In the first half of the game the Packers made two interceptions, and with one of them they made a touchdown. Just before the first interception when they made their first touchdown, the Steelers had to make a 3-point field goal because they could not make a touchdown. The half time show had the Black Eyed Peas, Slash, and Usher. The songs were amazing. One of the songs was “The Time.” The commercials were so funny, like the Doritos commercial where one guy finished his bag Doritos, and another guy comes by and says, “Are you going to finish that?” and the first guy says, “It is already gone,” and then instantly the other man grabs his hand and licks it and says “I love Doritos” and then says “cheese.”
After half time the game completely turned around. The Steelers were making touchdowns. But it looks like the Packers turned around and won the Super Bowl!!!!!After watching the game people could not stop talking about it. Matt is in his mid thirties and he said “I don’t really like football but that was the best game ever.”

Pumpkin King Steals Christmas
By: Chase Lemos
Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas is a claymation children’s movie that is filled with mystery. Henry Selick did an amazing job with character and setting design.
Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon) is board of the same old thing in Halloween Town. He is the pumpkin king but is tired of doing so well at it. He decides to leave Halloween Town and find something better. Sally ( Cathrine O’Hara) feels like she is trapped and she just wants to be free. Her master, Dr. Finkelstien (William Hickey) doesn’t think she is ready.
This story is obviously lead by song and in every seen you will hear something along the lines of “This is Halloween” or “My Dear Friend”. Whether jack is falling down a hollow tree or looking under a bed you will be truly entertained by all of the fun and odd camera work. This movie is fun and like Halloween and Christmas you will love this movie! I give this movie two bony fingers up!

Orange Jumpsuits, Little Girls and Evil Villains make blockbuster By: Chase Lemos
Chris Renaud’s animated comedy; Despicable Me is a funny and charming kid’s film that is great for all ages.
Gru, (played by Steve Carrel) a super evil villain is passed by and renamed the “old school” villain after a younger villain steals a pyramid. His “trusty” scientist, Dr. Nafario and himself make a plan to steal the moon. But there is a catch… this is when Margo (played by Miranda Cosgrove), Edith and Agnes come in and help them steal a shrink ray that they need for the plan. It gets a little topsey turvey but they all have a fun time along the way. This movie will make you laugh and make you cry. A story that will touch your heart and give you a new found respect for unicorns. This movie is perfect for boys who like shrink rays and girls who like ballet. This movie could go on and on. The fun camera work of rays and roller coasters make you feel like you are in the movie. You will crack up every time you hear Gru’s minions start up a conversation. This movie was a fun loving, family movie that is heart warming and hilarious. You will never forget Gru’s crazy adventure.
