Garter Snake
By: Vanessa
As we walk through the courtyard, the journalism class approaches a well known reptile-a Garter Snake. But something about this Garter Snake is different, it’s in a tree!
“I just climbed up here to sunbathe,” says Jeff the snake. Garter Snakes are very common in Salem, Oregon. They have yellow stripes on their backs and are not venomous. The Garter Snake is a constrictor who eats small mammals and bird eggs. They give live birth to 12-40 young. Garter Snakes mate after awakening from hibernation in March to April.
